Dharma Therapy Trust is raising funds through the Lam Rim Centres to build a new Gya House in Drepung Loseling Monastery (Gya House is where Ven. Geshe Damcho Yonten and Ven. Geshe Lobsang Thinley come from). As more monks arrive at the monastery, the present house has become too small. Also, it doesn't have its own water supply and the monks have to collect water from other houses.
The new house will have a total of 28 rooms for monks - 22 in the accommodation block and 6 above the prayer hall. The water supply has already been bored and water is available. The land was purchased from the monastery and a wall built round it in July 2002.

Gya House Site, July 2002

Work began on the new house in March because buildings are going up adjacent to it. This meant that building work could be done while access is easy and building workers can share their resources. To enable the work to start, Gya House borrowed money from Drepung Library.

Gya House Construction, March 2004

Gya House - getting there! July 2004

The hostel was well under way. The main structure was complete and the finishing off was soon to be started. Work will start on the prayer hall later.

In mid-October, our friends are looking pleased because ...

... here it is! Some work still needs to be done inside, but the outside is decorated and looking good! Now, let's concentrate on the Prayer Hall ....

A puja is performed on the site of the Prayer Hall with the new house looking good in the background.

Now concentrate...and ...

... the Prayer Hall foundations appear! This picture from November 2004 .

The first building work on the Prayer Hall, 12th January 2005

In just two weeks, the scaffolding from the ground floor is removed and the first floor of the Prayer Hall has begun. 26th January 2005.

7th March 2005, and the 1st floor is surrounded by scaffolding for the roof - and the floor for the second floor. The cement has to be kept wet so that it doesn't dry out too quickly in the hot sun.

26th March 2005 and work on the second floor has started

2nd May 2005. While work on the second floor continues, the prayer hall is cleared ready for decoration. The monks are now in the new building, studying hard!

17th June 2005. The finished house is on the right and the prayer hall building on the left. Some finishing structural work is still required and then fittings and decoration.

2nd November 2005. The Prayer Hall looks lovely now decorated! Some work still required inside.

The total cost of the house was estimated at Rs 4,000,000. At current exchange rates, £1 = 80 Rs. We were looking to raise a total of £60,000. Ven. Geshe Damcho-la sent £10,000 which left us with a target of £50,000. Dharma Therapy Trust sent £3,000 of its funds. Other contributions from the Centres and groups totalling £50,000 have now also been sent, achieving the required total!
More donations are always welcome towards furniture, maintenance etc.:
